Pregnancy, Childbirth & Early parenting.

Parents attending Pregnancy, Childbirth and Early parenting sessions are making some of the most important decisions they will ever make in their lives. These decisions impact on the health and well-being of their baby, themselves and their relationships.

Purposes of Childbirth Education Classes
There are many reasons for which parents come to childbirth education classes.
Some of the reasons may be:
  • To gain information on pregnancy, labour, birth, parenting and carseat safety
  • To develop practical parenting skills
  • To explore and share feelings, experiences and attitudes with others in the same situation
  • To develop friendships and establish support networks

Style of Learning
Parents Centre sessions are based on participatory education.  You will be asked what you want from the sessions as it is important to meet your needs.  Your Pregnancy, Childbirth & Early parenting Educator will use a variety of teaching techniques and small group work in order to give you the opportunity to discuss your own expectations, explore alternatives and work out solutions that best meet your own needs.  They also give you extra time beyond the breaks to mix with other group members which allows you to get to know them better.

Role of the Pregnancy, Childbirth & Early Parenting Educator
Your Educator is:
  • The educator who imparts information, teaches skills and challenges attitudes.  Provides clear, well researched and relevant information.
  • The facilitator who directs activities and interaction between class participants and encourages self-reliance and confidence
It is not the role of the Educator to advise you about your personal decisions.  If you have questions or there are issues you would like clarified beyond the level covered in the class, by all means ask your Educator.  However, decisions on your own health care depend on your own individual circumstances, and these decisions should be made by you, together with your Lead Maternity Carer and/or other health professionals.
Parents Centre volunteers may assist your Educator during the course.  Again, it is not their role to provide you with advice although they will be very happy to discuss any issues you wish to raise and to share their parenting experiences with you.
